Ethiopia Announces Three New Blue Nile Dams, Defying Egypt and US Pressure

Ethiopia announced plans in March 2026 to build three additional dams on the Blue Nile — Karadobi, Mabil, and Mendaya — at $3.5 billion each, adding over 5,700 MW of capacity on top of the recently inaugurated 5,150 MW GERD. Egypt pledged a 'firm and decisive response' while deepening military encirclement of Ethiopia through port agreements with Eritrea and troop deployments to Somalia. The announcement dismantles Egypt's claim to unilateral Nile control derived from colonial-era treaties that excluded the country supplying 80% of the river's water.
